The Naturalist's Library -
Ornithology including steel engraving of Thomas Bewick, hand-colored frontis, and 30 hand-colored plates after Edward Lear The photos below show plates from a Naturalist's Library Parrots volume that we sold a few years ago. The volume we have now is in the original red cloth-covered Naturalist's Library "everyman's" binding (with price on spine). Below is the full description of the current copy. SELBY, Prideaux John , Naturalist's Library, The Natural History of Parrots, W. H. Lizars, Edinburgh, undated. Most likely a later issue of this classic (circa 1850s), complete with engraving of Thomas Bewick, hand-colored vignette title page, and 30 hand-colored plates of parrots based on the art of the great Edward Lear. Very clean, some minor chipping along the long edge of a few text pages, all plates with tissues, in the original red cloth binding (with price stamped on spine) that was typical of the economy version of these books. A little chipping to cloth of spine, but generally tight and solid. This is the cleanest copy of this book I have ever seen. Superb. $800. Being hand-painted, the plates are NOT identical to those shown below but this will give you an idea of what they look like. All the plates below are in the book we have now, but the color choices and fineness of work may vary from plate to plate. Another thing to remember -- the book is very small, about the size (or even a bit smaller) than is shown in the photo immediately below.
