lounge: links we like

Here is a list of some of the websites we go back to again and again. We have not necessarily had any interactions with the companies or organizations to which we link.  The link is here either because we like the site at the other end, or we think you will find  good information there.  Clicking on a link will open up the site in a new window.  To return to minniesland.com, simply close the new window or switch back to the original browser window using the tool bar.  If you want to suggest some links of your own, we'd be glad to hear from you.  Information on the Web is changing all the time and active links can quickly become dead.  We do our best to keep our links current, but we could use your help.  Please drop us a line if a link on our site is no longer active.

Links are organized by category:

We'll be adding more, so come back soon.

AUDUBON ART

Audubon's Birds of America at the University of Pittsburgh - The University of Pittsburgh has made available an invaluable resource to everyone with an interest in Audubon's art and writing by digitizing their set of the Double Elephant Folio and the Ornithological Biography (OB), and making them available free of charge on the web.  You will come back to this superb website again and again.

Princeton Audubon Limited -- fine and reasonably priced facsimile prints of Audubon folio birds and quadrupeds.  We sell Princeton's beautiful and well-priced reproduction bird prints from the Havell Edition.  Princeton also carries 12 full-size animal prints from the Imperial Folio (28 x 22 inches), and has a selection of prints based on Audubon's original watercolors (16 x 24 inches).

Audubon's Multimedia Birds of America -- perhaps you are familiar with the Creative Multimedia Corporation DOS CD-ROMs that reproduce both the text and pictures of the octavo editions of the birds and quads.  Somebody put the content of the Birds CD on the Web.  He or she reports having tried to gain permission, but was still waiting to hear from them as of September 1998.  This material has been on the web since 1995 but has moved around a bit.  It was only by accident that we realized we needed to update this link in early 2003.  It is nice that this material is still available as it is enormously useful.  We take the opportunity here to thank abirdshome.com and the anonymous "rrb" for making it available.

Nature.net -- This site offers images of 51 original Audubon watercolors (NOT prints).  It also offers forums for nature enthusiasts to share information and experiences on a wide range of topics.

ART LINKS

AskART.com -- comprehensive database including auction results, biography, image galleries, books, dealers, and more.  This website provides information primarily on original works of art (e.g., paintings and drawings), not multiples such as prints.  Free until September 2001, AskART.com is now limiting availability of some its data, particularly auction results.  If you need auction information, subscriptions are available on a monthly or daily basis.  The website still provides a lot of free information and is well worth a visit.

Art-Mine.com, original fine art online.  Wide variety of original fine art for sale. Personalized art consulting services. Mediums include; paintings, sculpture, photography, drawings, mixed media and more.  This site has a well-categorized and extensive list of links to other art sites, including the sites of many contemporary wildlife artists.

Traditional Fine Arts Online, Inc. site guide -- a terrific site with amazing resources for artists, art collectors, and art professionals of all sorts.  The sponsors of this site, TFAOI, offers an online magazine (called Resource Library Magazine), geared to those interested in American representational art.  They describe it as "a one-of-a-kind online art magazine and library with thousands of individual Web pages containing feature articles, essays, plus much more." (Quoted from www.tfaoi.com home page.)  This site is much more than just a magazine -- it helped us find an excellent insurance agency specializing in fine art policies in neighboring Arlington VA after six weeks of frustrating local inquiry and internet searching.  The variety and depth of information here may not be apparent from a scan of the home page.  Explore this site and you will be impressed.  And you will possibly find information you need that you couldn't find elsewhere.

INFORMATION ON ANIMALS AND BIRDS

Bob Patterson's Zoology Website -- Bob's website includes a wealth of information about zoology, ecology, evolution, and related fields.  He has a "Birds of the World" section, including a number of pages about Linnaeus and how we got the names we use for birds.

CONSERVATION, RESTORATION, AND PROPER FRAMING

American Institute for Conservation of Historical and Artistic Works -- an excellent website with extensive resources for those looking for information on book or paper conservation, or anyone needing help finding a conservation professional.

Caring for your collections -- valuable information from the Library of Congress. DO NOT MISS THE INFORMATION ON FRAMING AND MATTING.  It is essential reading before you get a print -- or anything you value -- framed.

Gaylord.com -- Gaylord's newly revamped site offers a vast array of archival and conservation supplies for libraries and collectors, almost anything you can imagine relating to the repair or preservation of books and paper. Request a copy of their informative catalogue on the website or by calling 1-800-634-6307.

Light Impressions -- another supplier of archival products, Light Impressions offers a wide selection of archival storage/presentation systems (e.g., archival albums).  They also sell archival framing supplies. Request a catalogue directly from their site or by calling 1-800-828-6216.

CHINA AND CERAMICS

Because an informed consumer is a happier consumer, we repeat some of our links on lead in dinnerware.  For more information, see our page on lead in china.

Environmental Defense Fund Brochure -- excellent and thorough discussion on lead in pottery and china. Includes concrete recommendations for mitigating risk.  EDF recently revamped their site, so we've had to update this link.  Thanks to Anne for letting us know the link was out of date.

Food and Drug Administration Article --  discusses a dramatic case of lead poisoning from imported ceramic ware, and discusses precautions when purchasing china or pottery abroad.

PLACES TO VISIT

AudubonParkNY.com offers a virtual tour of the neighborhood that grew up around the Minniesland estate.  This relatively new website, put together by our good friend Matthew Spady, is very well illustrated and provides very detailed information on the Audubon Park neighborhood.

Audubon State Historic Site in St Francisville LA.   The site includes a museum, Oakley House (guided tours offered), and grounds open daily.  Also included on the site are nature trails, some gardens and some outbuildings.  Near the site is the town of St Francisville.  For more information, visit their website at www.stfrancisville.us.

Mill Grove -- information on the museum and wildlife sanctuary located at the first American home of John James Audubon.  The virtual tour is excellent.  We highly recommend a real-life tour as well if you are near or visiting the Philadelphia area.  You may also enjoy the website put together by students at the Audubon Elementary School after their visit to Mill Grove.

John James Audubon Museum and Nature Center -- we have visited this excellent museum in John James Audubon State Park in Henderson, KY and enjoyed it very much.  We particularly loved bird watching in the wildlife observation room where we saw a red fox and some birds we don't normally see at our backyard feeders.

John James Audubon in the West -- link to the interesting on-line exhibit based on the book that accompanied the 2001 exhibit mounted by the Buffalo Bill Historical Center.

A visitor's guide maintained by Nell Dillon-Ermers offers excellent information on places to visit in Northern Manhattan including the area that was formerly Minnie's Land.

The New-York Historical Society is a must for any Audubon fan who visits New York City.  There you will have the chance to see several of Audubon's original watercolor paintings for the Birds of America.  They are exhibited a few at a time in rotation.
